DRINK No. 4 – Pumpkin Old Fashioned

Our eldest daughter visited us from college this weekend, and our youngest (a sophomore in high school) had friends over for a halloween party.  We purchased a number of pumpkins and had intended to carve them this weekend.  Well, the best laid plans…  Sunday evening by the fire and time to think about drinks to settle in for nice Fall evening.  What would my wife like to drink?  Silly question.  After only three drinks, she still is without her “go to”, although she was tempted to repeat the orange-infused bourbon.  Well, we have all these pumpkins, and she was feeling like a bourbon, so…

Pumpkin Old Fashioned!

My wife likes the drink, although commented that it was rather sweet.  She wonders how it would be warmed.  It is a savory drink, and just right for a fireside evening.  I am hopeful that this will not be her “go to” drink, because making homemade pumpkin puree, while easy, is rather time-consuming.  Here is the recipe I used: http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/2008/10/make-your-own-pumpkin-puree/

2 tbsp. pumpkin puree
1 ½ oz. bourbon
1 oz. maple syrup
½ oz. Grand Marnier
dash orange bitters
Orange peel twist, for garnish

Combine pumpkin puree, bourbon, syrup, Grand Marnier and bitters in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake well and strain through a fine mesh strainer into a chilled old fashioned glass filled with fresh ice. Garnish with orange twist.
